Beatriz Haddad Maia v Lesia Tsurenko Head to Head

There was one previous meeting between these two way back in 2017 and Haddad Maia had won that after Tsurenko retired from the encounter at the end of the fifth game. They were to face off in Eastbourne last year but Tsurenko withdrew from the match before the start.

Haddad Maia Coming off French Open Semifinals

It’s a big transition for most players, going from playing clay for a couple of months to suddenly featuring on grass.

But more so for a player who made the semifinal at the French Open, thereby playing on dirt till the previous Thursday and then just four days later having to pack, travel, unpack, train for a few hours and feature in her season-opener on grass.

That’s what the case is for Haddad Maia who had made it to the last four stage at Roland-Garros in what was her best ever Grand Slam showing.

Compare that with her record at the other Grand Slams – a best of a second round appearance at all the other three – and you know how much that showing means to her.

That being said, Haddad Maia did have an excellent time on grass last year. She won two tournaments – the first two of her career – on this surface and then made the semifinal at the third at Eastbourne.

Haddad Maia starts off a defending champion here as a result and will hope she can make a quick switch.

Tsurenko Hoping to Shrug off Injury Concerns

Fitness has remained a concern for Tsurenko but given her performances despite being a 34-year-old veteran, one would probably understand.

The positive aspect to that is she enters the grass court swing with an excellent previous season too. While it might not have yielded two tournament victories like it did for Haddad Maia, Tsurenko did make it to the quarterfinal at the Eastbourne International despite starting out as a qualifier.

And at Wimbledon she overcame Jodie Burrage and Anhelina Kalinina to enter the third round where she fell fighting against Jule Niemeier.

Coming back to 2023, Tsurenko had made the fourth round at the French Open where she had to retire from her match against the eventual champion Iga Swiatek. She would hope to have recovered from it as she also looks to make that switch over to grass.

Haddad Maia v Tsurenko Prediction and Tip

Haddad Maia will hold the edge despite the quick switch that’s needed to be made because of her opponent’s fitness concerns. Expect her to come through in three sets.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Haddad Maia to win: 3/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 1/1
