Injury issues meant that Venus Williams was forced to miss out five months of tennis but she is back now and hoping to make a difference. A difference to her results and a difference to her ranking which reads an abysmal 696th in the world at the moment.
That has been down to her lack of tennis over the years with Venus having played not more than 14 matches in any of the seasons since 2019.
In fact she participated in just four matches last year, losing three of them.
The seven-time majors winner, who will turn 43 during this tournament in Rosmalen, will also hope her hamstring stays in line having injured it in Auckland. At that tournament in January, Venus had won her opener against Katie Volynets before falling to Lin Zhu in the second.

Naef is 25 years younger than Williams and that gives her a huge advantage – she will have the legs to push on even in the final set when Venus, who is returning from a hamstring issue, might not.
The other aspect about Naef’s game that could come to the fore will be her form all season.
The Swiss teenager has mostly played on the ITF circuit this season but to still come away with a 28-7 win-loss record – which also includes a couple of title wins – speaks a lot about her performances.
It also means that coming into a match against a player who has been struggling for wins for years now will give her a good chance of registering her maiden win at the highest level.
