Denis Shapovalov v Marton Fucsovics Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these and both have shared these wins. Both matches, however, came in hardcourt competitions.

Shapovalov Hoping to Improve Grass Record

For a player who has an overall win-loss record of 177-146 and a win percentage of 56.5% in hardcourt competitions and 53% on clay, Shapovalov would love to do a lot better on grass. Here, he is a mere 12-16 on the win-loss trail.

What could make it slightly more difficult to turn things around is how poorly Shapovalov has performed this season.

He’s featured in 10 tournaments in 2023 and won a total of nine matches in them. Four opening ousters have punctuated that record.

Last year, Shapovalov’s only win on grass came in fourth tournament he featured in for the season – a scrappy, five-set win over Arthur Rinderknech at Wimbledon. That had followed opening defeats in Stuttgart, Queen’s Club and Mallorca.

And he fell in the second round soon after, losing to Brandon Nakashima despite starting out a 3/5 favourite in that encounter.

He starts a 4/6 favourite here too. Can he live up to that top billing?

Fucsovics Comes Through the Qualifiers

Having fallen to 86th in the world, Fucsovics was forced to feature in the qualifiers of this tournament to make it through to the main draw. The good news for the Hungarian player is that he did that with great aplomb and ease.

Having lost in the second round to Novak Djokovic at the French Open, Fucsovics overcame Louis Wessels and Altug Celikbilek, losing a total of 12 games in those two matches.

What makes Fucsovics chances a tad brighter coming into this one is his overall record on grass is quite solid. More vitally it’s been consistent with his performances at the lower level as well.

At the highest level it’s similar to Shapovalov’s record, having won 11 of his 26 matches, which also includes a quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon 2021.

Can he now take that step up and overcome a player who might be a touch vulnerable coming into this encounter?

Shapovalov v Fucsovics Prediction and Tip

Shapovalov might be the favourite here but we think this could go either way and might even need a third set. No clear winner here for us.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Fucsovics to win a set: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 23.5 games in the match: 10/11
