In what was the first tournament on grass for the season, Thompson made it to the semifinal at the Surbiton Challenger.
And while one might point to it being a competition on the Challenger circuit, it must be quickly added that the player list on show was probably better than some of the ATP 250 competitions played on the circuit.
Thompson himself needed to overcome Mackenzie McDonald and Rinky Hijikata to make it to the last four where he went down to Andy Murray, the eventual winner.
And the Aussie has had a good time on grass overall too, having won the title in Surbiton last season and then made the final of the Nottingham Challenger the same year. What he would now like is for him to go deep into this tournament, converting some of that Challenger form into ATP 250 results.

19-year-old Mpetshi Perricard had never played on grass before this. Not even on the lower circuit.
Which is why when he came into his first qualifier in this tournament against Andrea Vavassori, he was a 13/10 underdog against his more experienced and slightly more in-form opponent.
While Mpetshi Perricard needed three sets, he came through that and then defeated Edan Lehsem to qualify for his first main draw tournament on this surface. He had earlier been given a wildcard to play in the French Open main draw and taken Genaro Alberto Olivieri to five sets.
He might not have it as easy against a player like Thompson who has done well on grass but he will start off knowing he can put up a fight.

Thompson will be a favourite here but do the odds of 1/4 justify the difference between the two players? We think otherwise.
