Laslo Djere v Ricardas Berankis Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings between these two including two on the Challenger circuit and one in a Grand Slam. Djere leads 2-1, having won both his matches on clay and lost indoors on hardcourt.

Having had the misfortune of taking on a top-10 player in Andrey Rublev in his first round at the French Open, Djere was knocked out of the competition at that very stage but not before he had taken a set off his opponent.

Add that to his quarterfinal appearance at the Banja Luka Open and the fourth round in Rome and he has had a decent run on clay this season.

The question is if he can convert that into something drastically different on grass where he has struggled all his career. In fact while his overall career win percentage is 48%, he has lost nine of the 12 matches he has played in main draw of grass court competitions.

His three wins on this surface have come against the little-known Henri Squire, Pablo Cuevas who has fallen off the grid when it comes to his ranking and Guido Andreozzi who has never been ranked better than 70th in the world.

In short, it has needed Djere a really struggling opponent to win a match on grass. Who is he playing here? The 212th-ranked Berankis!

Things haven’t quite looked too good for Berankis all season with the Lithuanian player having featured in just one tournament at this level before this. And even that came in the qualifiers of the French Open where he lost in the second round.

Immediately following that, Berankis opted to play here and won his two qualifying rounds to make it to his first main draw since last September.

While he was expected to defeat Noah Gabriel in his opening qualifier here, Berankis had come into the second round as a 6/5 underdog against Rinky Hijikata. For him to send his Aussie opponent packing 6-4, 6-4 would have been a huge relief.

A former top-50 player, Berankis has a 7-18 win-loss record on grass, not too different from his opponent in this one.

His overall form has been underwhelming too but he enters this match having had a run in on grass unlike his opponent. Therein might lie the rub.

Djere v Berankis Prediction and Tip

Berankis might not be a favourite coming into this but he sure has a good chance of winning his first main draw here given how things have gone for his opponent on this surface.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Under 22.5 games in the match: 4/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Berankis to win: 11/10
