Hijikata Comes Back from a Slow Start against Brouwer

It took Hijikata three sets and nearly two and a half hours but he finally managed to come away a winner in his first round match here.

Having made it through to the main draw as a lucky loser, Hijikata edged out Gijs Brouwer 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2 to make it to the second round. Enduring 12 aces from his opponent, Hijikata also saved four of the five break-points he faced in his encounter before scooping the win.

In fact, he did not face a single break-point in any of the first two sets before getting broken in the second game of the decider.

Hijikata retaliated with a break on either side of that though and wrapped it up with a third successive break of serve in the third set.

He will hope to continue with the same fighting spirit when he faces a player ranked over 50 places ahead of him.

Huesler Shocks Cressy

Starting out at 9/5 odds to overcome Maxime Cressy, Huesler managed to do just that as he claimed a straight-set win over his much more fancied American opponent in his opener.

Huesler was on court for an hour and 41 minutes in order to send Cressy packing 6-2, 7-6 (2) to make it to round two following a run of five successive defeats before this.

An early break in the first set was more than enough for Huesler to take the lead in the match but Cressy retorted with the first break of the second set to take a 4-2 lead. He had a chance to serve to serve it out at 5-3 but Huesler came back to break his opponent and then grabbed the win in a ensuing tie-breaker.

In doing so, Huesler had won his maiden main draw match on grass. Can he double that count against a player who wasn’t even supposed to be in the main draw after losing his second qualifier?

Hijikata v Huesler Prediction and Tip

Huesler is the bookmaker’s favourite but will that be enough here? We think he could be in for a bit of a fight that could see at least one set going the distance.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Hijikata to win a set: 4/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 23.5 games in the match: 5/6
