Barrere Close to Career-Best Despite Lacklustre Clay Season

Barrere ended the clay court swing with just five wins from the 12 matches he played spread across a whopping seven tournaments. What that meant was he was nearly playing every week and came away with only those many victories.

His best showing came at the Rome Masters where he reached the third round but opening round exits at the French Open and a Challenger tournament and his failure to qualify for the Monte-Carlo Masters would have been a pain point.

The shift to grass won’t be easy either with Barrere having struggled to get going on this surface.

At most of the previous grass tournaments he has played, Barrere failed to qualify to the main draw and the only time he has won a match came at the 2019 Wimbledon – nearly four years ago.

He also plays an opponent who relies heavily on his serve, making it doubly difficult for his chances.

Underwhelming Season for Otte

He is on a four-match losing streak but it’s not much this run that would be a bother. For a player who touched a career-best ranking of 36th not so long ago, Otte has won just six of his 22 matches he’s played this season and his ranking has fallen off the cliff as a result.

Otte’s most recent result was a three-set loss in the first round of the Heilbronn Challenger at the hands of Facundo Diaz Acosta.

The obvious good news is that Otte’s game is defined by his serving and that could come to the fore on grass. Especially after the kind of grass swing he’s had over the past two seasons.

In 2022, Otte made the semifinal at both, the Halle and Stuttgart Open and then entered the third round at Wimbledon. In the year before that, Otte came through the qualifiers at Wimbledon before shocking Arthur Rinderknech to reach the second round there.

Can he continue with that grass form in a year he has struggled to get going?
