Zhu Overcomes the Odds, Parks

In a match that started out with Zhu at 33/20 odds to defeat Alycia Parks, ended with the Chinese player coming through in straight sets to reach the second round.

Zhu might have been ranked 39th in the world but hasn’t shown any kind of grass court proficiencies over a longish career than has seen her feature in a grass court tournament for the first time in 2013. As recently as last season, Zhu had lost all the three grass court matches she’d played.

Which is why it came as no surprise she wasn’t quite the favourite going into her opener here, but an hour and 36 minutes later she had surprised her American opponent.

The world number 39 came away a 7-6 (5), 6-2 winner, despite facing 10 break-points in the encounter. She was broken twice while dishing out four breaks of serves to Parks including three in the second set.

Can Zhu get a hold of her serve and improve on her showing in the second round?

Frech Has Some Trouble against Kartal

Having needed a couple of qualifying wins to make it to the main draw, Sonay Kartal continued to make things difficult for her more fancied opponents. This time around though, Frech found a way to get past Kartal and move into the second round of this tournament for the first time since 2018.

Frech, who is at her career-best ranking of 77th in the world, was on court for two hours and 10 minutes before coming through 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 to enter the second round in her fifth successive WTA tournament.

Two late breaks of serves helped Frech win the opening set but Kartal earned an early break in the second. While the Brit was broken back in the eighth game, she went 6-5 up and then served it out to win the set.

Kartal ran out of steam in the decider though as Frech broke her two times to wrap up the match with ease.

Can she now take advantage of Zhu’s grass court issues?

Zhu v Frech Prediction and Tip

Frech is an unsurprising favourite but at 8/11 it looks like those are tempting odds for her win. A straight-set win could be in the offing too.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Frech to win: 8/11
  • High Risk Tip: Frech to win in straight sets: 7/4
