It was a perfect start to the grass court swing for Kudermetova as she needed a mere 52 minutes to go past Alison Riske in her opener. Aided by Riske’s injury, Kudermetova was leading 6-3, 3-0 when her American opponent opted to retire from the encounter.
Kudermetova looked like she was slow off the blocks when she was broken in the very first game of the match. That point onward, however, there was no looking back for the Russian as she broke right back and then again in the eighth game of the opening set.
She then served out to love before registering successive breaks in the second set to go 3-0 up.
This win would be a bit of a relief for Kudermetova who had fallen in the very first round of the French Open at the hands of Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. She now has another golden chance to make it to the quarterfinal of this tournament, having done that in each of her previous three appearances here.

Having needed to go past Lexie Stevens and Kristina Dmitruk in the qualifiers to make it to the main draw, the 163rd-ranked Zhao was 31/10 odds to win her opener against Ysaline Bonaventure.
This wasn’t too surprising given Zhao has never been ranked better than 131st in the world and has never won a main draw match on grass.
In fact before the start of this tournament, Zhao had played in only four previous tournaments on grass spread across qualifiers at the highest level and ITF competitions and hadn’t won a match.
As a result, a 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4) win over Bonaventure in this opening round encounter augurs rather well for the Canadian player as she now looks to improve on her previous best showing for the season – a second round appearance at the Bogota Open.
It won’t be easy against Kudermetova though.
