Maria Continues to Make it Difficult for Zhang

Shuai Zhang hasn’t been in any sort of rhythm on court and Maria took full advantage of that, living up to her 2/5 favourites odds in the opener here.

Maria defeated Zhang 6-1, 6-4 to reach the second round in a match lasting a mere 68 minutes to add to her solid start on grass at the Surbiton ITF competition last week.

A quarterfinalist there with wins over Carole Monnet and Harriet Dart, Maria raced through the first set against Zhang in a mere 24 minutes. Two breaks of serves got her a 5-0 lead before she wrapped it up soon enough.

In the second, however, it was Zhang who drew first blood to go 2-0 up. That was followed by Maria breaking back twice, only to lose her serve again in the eighth game. At 4-4, Maria earned her third break of the set, and then three match-points off her own serve.

She converted the third of those to march into round two in a tournament she was a semifinalist in 2018.

Watson Surprises Niemeier

Jule Niemeier was an 8/11 favourite coming into her opening round match against Watson but fell away in straight sets to the British qualifier.

Watson, who had defeated Sophie Chang and Amelia Rajecki in her two qualifying rounds here, overcame Niemeier 6-4, 6-3 in her opener lasting an hour and 38 minutes.

While the Brit lost her own serve thrice in the encounter, it was her ability to return well that helped her come through. Watson overpowered Niemeier’s serves on a whopping six occasions including three times in each of the two sets.

Niemeier did have her chances in the first set when she went a break up on two separate occasions but that wasn’t enough as Watson retaliated rather well.

It will need a lot more than just that though now for Watson who faces the Wimbledon 2022 semifinalist for a place in the last eight here.

Maria v Watson Prediction and Tip

Maria shouldn’t have too many worries here and can be expected to come through in two.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Maria to win: 8/13
  • High Risk Tip: Maria to win in straight sets: 6/4
