Giorgi Beats Brengle

World No. 47 Camila Giorgi navigated a tricky match in the Nottingham Open first round, beating Madison Brengle 7-6(5), 6-2, in 95 minutes. Her service game, however, wasn’t up to the mark (44% first service percentage) – in many ways, she got through with her experience and Brengle’s shoddy play.

Now at 15-10, Giorgi is seeking to recapture some of that magic she enjoyed on hard courts earlier in the year.

She won the Merida Open and reached round three in the Australian Open. On clay, her best result was the third-round showing in Rome.

In Camila’s defence, she was plagued by fitness concerns; she retired mid-match in the early rounds of Madrid and French Open; in the latter, she retired against Jessica Pegula in round two.

Fitness seems to be a factor here – perhaps, it is why she didn’t start on the strongest footing in Nottingham.

That said, the 31-year-old has decent experience on grass – she reached the quarters in Wimbledon in 2018 and won the Rosmalen Open in 2015.

Mandlik Survives Tomova Scare

Elizabeth Mandlik, age 22, found herself in a precarious affair in the first round. Playing Viktoriya Tomova was a fight that was fought until the very end. Mandlik, who began as a qualifier, took the win 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(5) in a close game that could have just as easily gone the other way.

Over the weekend, the youngster defeated Iryna Shymanovich and Daria Snigur to make it to the main draw.

Her record for the year is now 19-17, with a singles ranking of World No. 110. Her best result came in the Reus Challenger, where she was a runner-up. Starting as a qualifier, Mandlik beat the likes of Jasmine Paolini, Nuria Parrizas Diaz, and Dayana Yastremska.

Unfortunately, that was the only time so far in 2023 that Elizabeth bagged successive main-draw victories. Perhaps, she can turn it around in Nottingham?

Giorgi v Mandlik Prediction and Tip

Giorgi starts this one as the heavy favourite, but it is not an absolute certainty that she will win this one. Time and again, the Italian has succumbed to rather unsuspecting players – giving Mandlik plenty of precedents to work with. Expect an entertaining affair.

Tips:

  • Low-Risk Tip: Giorgi to win: 7/11
  • High-Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 3/1
