Linette Eases Past Australian

It has taken Linette comparatively late in her career to enjoy major success, but she now has two senior WTA titles to her name, and has appeared in three more finals.

However, it was her performance in Melbourne earlier this year that really caught the eye, as she reached the semi-finals before eventually losing to Arnya Sabalenka.

That was by far her best showing in a Grand Slam – her Wimbledon record is more modest, by contrast, with two third round appearances the best she has managed.

She made a winning start to her latest grass court campaign, though, beating the world number 136, Olivia Gadecki of Australia, in straight sets.

Gadecki dropped her serve in the opening game of the match, and Linette just consolidated her lead to take the set.

Two breaks put the Pole in control of the second set as well. To her credit, Gadecki claimed one of them back, but Linette was able to keep her at arm’s length for the rest of the match.

Burrage Wins Three-Set Battle

After enduring the shock of having no competitors in the main draw of the French Open this year, female British tennis could do with a shot in the arm, so Burrage’s first round victory over Tereza Martincova of the Czech Republic was warmly welcomed by the local crowd.

It was a tense close match, though, as exemplified by the first set, which required a tie-break to settle it after six holds apiece, Burrage going on to edge it.

The second set proved more erratic on service for both players – Burridge was broken three times, Martincova once, and was forced to save multiple break points. Nevertheless, it was the Czech player who was able to take the match into a third and decisive set.

Again each had break points, but, this time none were converted, and it all came down to the tie-break.

Burridge went a mini-break up, Martincova pulled that back, but an unforced error gave the British player match point, which she gratefully accepted.

Linette v Burrage Prediction and Tip

Whilst Burrage will no doubt have enthusiastic local support, that will only carry her so far against an experienced opponent now used to playing in the biggest tournaments.

Linette will already be eyeing the quarter-finals.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Linette to win: 2/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
