World no. 68 Mackenzie McDonald of the U.S. defeated third seed Borna Coric in straight sets on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals in ‘s-Hertogenbosch for the second time in his career.
The American, who lost all six of his matches on clay (which included a Challenger match), is back to winning ways on grass. Although he did not start off well, losing his opening round match in Surbiton Challenger last week, but he has won both his matches at the Rosmalen Open. What’s more, he been broken just once in the first two rounds.
McDonald, who had begun his campaign with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Ilya Ivashka, needed an hour and 27 minutes to beat Coric 6-4, 6-4 in the second round.
McDonald wasn’t broken by the Croatian in the match as he saved the only break point that he faced. He held six break points though, converting two of them.
The 28-year-old had also reached the quarterfinal in ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2018, but has not reached the semifinal.
McDonald has reached just one semifinal this year and that was in Delray Beach. Can he reach a second semifinal with a win on Thursday?

Hijikata Rallies Past Huesler
Lucky loser Rinky Hijikata moved into the last eight stage with a second consecutive come-from-behind win.
The world no. 133, who had come back from a set down to beat local hope Gijs Brouwer 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-2 in the first round, rallied past world no. 82 Marc-Andrea Huesler in three sets on Wednesday.
Outplayed in the first set by the Swiss, Hijikata got the solitary break in the second and the third sets to win the two hour and three minute contest 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Hijikata had beaten Robin Haase in straight sets in the first qualifying round but had lost to Ricardas Berankis in the second qualifying round. However, he got a lucky loser’s spot in the main draw.
The 22-year-old was also a quarterfinalist at the Surbiton Challenger and so he is 5-2 from all his matches on grass this year. It’s his first quarterfinal at the tour level this year.

McDonald is the more experienced player and has been in fine form on hard courts this year. He has also found form on grass now, and will be the favourite to reach the semifinals.
