Viktorija Golubic needed just an hour and 11 minutes to beat former champion Donna Vekic in the second round on Wednesday.

Golubic was broken once in each set by the world no. 20, but she broke Vekic twice in the first set and thrice in the second to pull off a 6-4, 6-1 victory,

Golubic had also won her first round match in straight sets, defeating compatriot Jil Teichmann 6-4, 6-3.

Ranked no. 150th in the world, the Swiss will be looking to reach the semifinals for the second time in Nottingham. She had made it to the last four in 2022 but was stopped from progressing further by Alison Riske.

Golubic, who has mostly been seen in the lower level tournaments this year, was a quarterfinalist at the ITF Surbiton as well and therefore she is 4-1 on grass this year.

Qualifier Heather Watson has been in terrific touch in Nottingham. The world no. 195, who won both her qualifying round matches in straight sets, has stormed into the quarterfinals without dropping a set.

Watson registered back-to-back wins over Germans in teh first two rounds. First, she defeated Jule Niemeier 6-4, 6-3 in the opening round and then she ousted Tatjana Maria 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday in the second round.

The 31-year-old Briton failed to save either of the two break points she faced in the match, but she capitalised on half of the eight break points she held to beat the world no. 66 on Wednesday.

Watson had qualified for the main draw with wins over Sophie Chang and Amelia Rajecki.

This is the second time that the four-time tour level champion has reached the last eight this year, following her run in Hua Hin. Can she make it to her first semifinal of the year?

It’s an unexpected quarterfinal but with both players displaying superb form expect this one to be a cracking contest. Golubic had beaten Watson last year and made it to the semifinal. She has looked good this year as well and  she took down the fourth seed Vekic in the second round. So she holds a slight edge going into the contest.
