Krueger Surprises Azarenka

It was meant to be a straightforward win for Victoria Azarenka and while it turned out to be a straightforward win alright, the result was a bit of a surprise. The 16/5 underdog Krueger had managed to overhaul Azarenka and done that in straight sets.

Krueger, who had dropped a mere three games in her first round win over Rebecca Peterson, routed Azarenka 6-3, 6-2 to march into the quarterfinal.

Just 19 years of age, Krueger has never been ranked better than 148th in the world but that was hardly a problem for the American in her match against Azarenka. She was on court for a mere hour and 14 minutes and broke the Azarena serve four times in the process.

The sole loss of serve for Krueger came as she served for the first set at 5-1 but she held on to love in the next game to grab the lead.

It was a lot easier for Krueger in the second set as she went 2-0 up and then broke again in the seventh game to take a 5-2 lead. While she frittered away four match-points at that point, Kruger converted the fifth to register her second career win on grass.

Hruncakova Surprises Andreescu

Once ranked 43rd in the world, Hruncakova has fallen to 144th and that also reflects in the fact she did not win a single main draw match this season since making the quarterfinal of the Auckland Open in January.

Hruncakova hasn’t played like a 144th-ranked player in this tournament though.

Much like Krueger, she wasn’t the favourite coming into her second round match. Forget being a favourite she was a distant second, a distant 4/1 to crash the Andreescu party.

And that’s exactly what Hruncakova did as she carved out a 7-6 (6), 6-3 win in a match that went on for nearly two hours. Part of the reason for that was Hruncakova’s serving – she faced a whopping 16 break-points in the encounter but what was surprising was Andreescu managed to break her just twice.

Andreescu lost her own serve three times including once when served for the first set at 5-3 but rather shockingly she missed out on a solid nine set-points.

Hruncakova got herself one of those and won the first set before easing through to win the second.

Krueger v Hruncakova Prediction and Tip

While Krueger starts a bookmakers’ favourite, we won’t be counting Hruncakova out of this. Expecting a keenly-tussled encounter.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Hruncakova to win a set: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
