Hurkacz Wins a Slugfest against Watanuki

He is ranked 121st in the world and had to make it through to the main draw as a qualifier but Yosuke Wawtnuki was always going to put up a fight. That he would stretch Hurkacz the manner in which he did in the end was a big surprise though.

Not only did Hurkacz need three sets to come through his second round match against Watanuki, he was on court for two hours and 21 minutes and needed two tie-breakers for his win.

What was interesting to see was there was just one break of serve in the entire match with Hurkacz unable to get past the Watanuki serve even once. He had five opportunities but Watanuki saved them all while getting past Hurkacz’s serve once in the opening set.

Having received an opening round bye, Hurkacz has now made the quarterfinal at this event for the first time in his career. He will want to improve drastically but the good news is he will be up against a player ranked 74th and will have that advantage of being 60 places ahead of him.

O’Connell Shocks Sonego

Lorenzo Sonego was a 2/5 favourite coming into his second round encounter against O’Connell but fell in straight sets to the Aussie. In defeating Sonego, O’Connell had won successive matches on grass for the first time in his career and just the fifth time overall this season.

O’Connell needed an hour and 52 minutes of court time for his 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory which saw him save all five of the break-points he faced. In turn he got the better of the much-fancied Sonego’s serve once – it came in the second set – and that was enough for him to come away a winner.

Sonego had his chances in two of the games in the opening set to break his opponent and squandered them. Those proved to be costly as the first set-point that O’Connell got in the tie-breaker, he converted it with a mini-break of serve.

The second set went to serve till the seventh game with both players unable to get even close to breaking their opponent. In the eighth game, however, O’Connell converted his second break-point and then served it out to clinch his spot in the last eight.

Hurkacz v O’Connell Prediction and Tip

While Hurkacz is a 2/5 favourite here, he did look rusty in his previous win. Can he shrug that off win it easily here?

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 0.5 tie-breakers in the match: 4/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 23.5 games in the match: 1/1
