Cornet Sends Sakkari Packing

In what was the upset of the tournament, Cornet did not spend a lot of time in getting past the top seeded Maria Sakkari in the second round.

Cornet, who had earlier taken three sets to get past Katie Swan in her opener, was on court for an hour and 28 minutes but played some of her best tennis of this season to win 6-1, 6-4.

Successive breaks of serves in the first set kick-started Cornet’s renaissance in this second round encounter and while she frittered away four set-points in her attempt to bagel Sakkari, she won the next game on her own serve to grab the set.

In the second, Cornet came out in a very similar fashion as she went 4-1 ahead with two breaks of serves. Sakkari broke back in the sixth but that was as far as she would get to Cornet’s serve, who then served it out to make it to the last eight.

This was the first time this season that Cornet has won successive matches in a top-level WTA tournament. Can she improve it to three in a row?

Mandlik Surprises Giorgi

For the third match in a row, Mandlik had come into her encounter as a second favourite and for the third successive time she surprised her opponent, needing three sets to do that.

Mandlik, who is currently at her career-best of 110th in the world and could even break into the top-100 the manner in which she is going here, overcame the 3/10 favourite Camila Giorgi in her second round encounter.

With wins over Daria Snigur and Viktoriya Tomova in the qualifiers and the first round of the main draw before this, Mandlik looked to have come into this match full of confidence. And that showed even when she lost the second set and it seemed like the momentum would shift drastically in the favour of the world number 47.

Mandlik didn’t let that happen, coming away a 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 winner to seal her quarterfinal berth.

Can she make it four shocks in a row now?

Cornet v Mandlik Prediction and Tip

Cornet has all the experience in the world but Mandlik’s form and youth make her a good pick for this one. Backing a Mandlik win in three.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Mandlik to win: 1/1
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/5
