Lehecka Improving on Grass

Jiri Lehecka has looked a lot better on grass this year compared to last year’s. There aren’t many grass courts where Lehecka grew up and most of his tennis growing up was played either on clay or on hard courts. He’s fair on both surfaces but grass has never been his surface.

He is 1-4 all-time on the surface with his only win coming this year and it happened last week in Stuttgart where he outplayed Marcos Giron. The American is a good player on grass so the win certainly isn’t one to toss out easily. The run ended against Frances Tiafoe which was somewhat expected.

The Czech player faces a similar dilemma against Davidovich Fokina. The Spaniard is equally quick and similarly good on the surface compared to Tiafoe. He’s a former junior champion of Wimbledon so that’s a tough one for Lehecka.

A lot will depend on how he serves. He can do it well though he needs more experience on the grass with a solid future projection as he matures as a player. It’s been a good year so far with 24 wins and 16 defeats though much of that came in the earlier part of the year.

Fokina Returns to Grass

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is a former junior Wimbledon champion though that success on the surface hasn’t really translated to the pros yet. His record on the surface is 8-9 and he’s certainly capable of much more on the surface.

His best is played on clay courts though he has the necessary skill to play well on all surfaces. His problem is consistency as he can’t seem to find it and this year has been rather similar. He’s 19-14 on the year which bodes well as he might finish with more wins than losses this year.

That wasn’t the case last year but he generally should beat Lehecka on grass. Clay would be a toss-up but on grass, the experience should matter in the end.

He’s played a bit better recently than the Czech player as well so I have faith that he’ll be able to use that and win this match.

Lehecka v Davidovich Fokina Prediction and Tip

As noted above, Fokina has more experience on grass and that should help him acclimate a bit better on the surface. I have faith that he’ll get it done but an over is worth looking at. This might go to three sets as neither player plays with a lot of consistency.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Fokina to win the match: 4/7
