Berrettini Begins Title Defence

Matteo Berretini won the trophy last year in Queen’s but not only last year. He won the event in the past two years so he’ll try to defend the trophy successfully like he managed last year. It’s going to be very tough as his return on grass last week in Stuttgart ended with a very poor performance against Lorenzo Sonego.

He lost in straight sets and left the court in tears. Queen’s is a good spot for him so there is hardly a better place to start turning the corner. He managed only 17 matches this year (9-8) due to injuries that left him unable to play for a very long time.

The Italian is by far one of the best grass players on Tour with a 36-9 record on the surface all time. The serve is his main weapon but confidence is very important for that shot. He’s not playing with a lot of confidence in this one so expect this one to be very tough for Berrettini.

Having beaten Ruusuvuori in the past helps and he needs to win.

Ruusuvuori Hoping to Find Form On Grass

Emil Ruusuvuori is a very polarizing player because he approaches tennis with a very clear and risky playstyle. When it works it’s almost impossible to beat him though that happens in maybe 3 out of 100 matches. Most of the time, Ruusuvuori is pretty good but likely not top-10 material.

He also tends to spam errors when things don’t go his way so it’s really hard to predict what kind of effort you’ll get on a daily basis. Lately, it’s been mostly good with a 21-17 record overall. On grass, Ruusuvori is 3-1 overall which is pretty good and overall he’s 11-9.

Grass can be a very good surface for him because he has a good and powerful serve and very flat groundstrokes. The issue is consistency because it’s almost impossible for him to hold a high level for a very long time. Due to that, his matches tend to go up and down and I expect to see something similar here.

Expect a good effort though, he’s been pretty solid lately.

Berrettini v Ruusuvuori Prediction and Tip

It’s a tough one to call because it’s far more likely the Finnish player wins in two sets than the Italian. I think we see three so I’ll back the over.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
