Ben Shelton v JJ Wolf Head to Head

They have faced off once before and that came at the Australian Open earlier this year. The match went into five sets before Shelton edged out Wolf to reach the quarterfinals.

Shelton Has Never Played in Grass Before

It will be a grass court debut for Shelton, who at 20 is yet to play even in the qualifiers or grass court Challenger competitions before this.

The American has had an interesting season otherwise too.

He waltzed into the top 50 of the ATP Rankings thanks to his quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open but hasn’t done too much since then. And yet, Shelton will enter this tournament at his career-best ranking of 35th in the world.

That has been down to him having had virtually no points to defend from the previous season and the odd wins in Indian Wells, Barcelona and Estoril. Can he up his game and bring home a victory on grass now?

Wolf Enters as a Lucky Loser

A fourth round appearance at the Australian Open earlier this year – where he would go on to lose to Shelton – was followed by a semifinal showing in Dallas for Wolf. Since then, and much like Shelton, Wolf’s form has also tapered off a tad.

I mean he’s still had some better results than Shelton but none can be compared to the aforementioned couple of runs.

Wolf was a quarterfinalist at the Houston Open and then made the third round at the Italian Masters, but then lost in the opener at the French Open.

And like Shelton, Wolf also hadn’t played in any grass court competition before this. He needed the qualifiers route to enter this tournament and he has made it through as a lucky loser after falling to Mackenzie McDonald in the second qualifying round.

Shelton v Wolf Prediction and Tip

Not much to choose from between these two Americans and while Wolf starts a bookmakers’ favourite, it could get very tight.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Wolf to win: 3/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
