Lauren Davis will be making her eighth appearance in Birmingham. The American has made five first round exits in her previous seven appearances, while making the round of 16 twice, including last year.

The 29-year-old has been in very good form this year and a 19-11 season record across levels is a reflection of that.

Davis had won the Hobart International title this year, ending a six year title drought. In 2017, she had won her maiden title in Auckland, in what was then her third WTA final. Since then she had not played in a title match until reaching the final in Hobart this year,m where she defeated Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the final.

More recently, she was a semifinalist on clay in Strasbourg and in the WTA 125 in Reus.

Davis has played a lot of tennis on grass over her career, but her best was a semifinal finish in Nottingham in 2021.

This will be her first tournament on grass this year, Can she make an impressive start?

Facing Davis will be world no. 62 Caty McNally, who featured in the Rosmalen Open last week.

McNally won her first round match against Katy Volynets in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, but lost to Celine Naef in round 2.

Overall the 21-year-old is 15-11 across levels  and 9-9 on the tour this year. McNally’s best this year was a semifinal finish in Merida and she was a finalist at the WTA 125 in Paris.

McNally is a good player on grass with an overall record of 22-10 across levels. Her best on grass remains a semifinal finish in Surbiton in 2019, while at the top level she was a quarterfinalist in ‘s-Hertogenbosch last year.

This will be her third main draw appearance in Birmingham. She lost in the first round in 2021 and in the second in 2022. How far can she go this year?

Davis v McNally Prediction and Tip

This is going to be a tight contest and may go the distance. Davis is more experienced on grass and has been more consistent on the surface than McNally. While McNally has already played on the surface this year, so that should be an advantage for her. Expect three sets with Davis edging past McNally.
