Svitolina Returning to Grass After Two Years

Coming back from her maternity break during the clay season this year, Elina Svitolina made a tremendous return to professional tennis. It seemed the Ukrainian was never away from the sport as she won her 17th WTA title in Strasbourg and then went on to reach the quarterfinals of the French Open.

This was the fourth time that Svitolina had reached the last eight stage in Roland Garros but she failed to make it to the semifinal once again.

Svitolina had begun her season by losing the first three of her tour level matches in Charleston, Madrid and Rome, but a run to the semifinal in WTA125 in Saint Malo began to turn things around for her.

She is 12-7 overall and 8-4 on the tour this year, having only played on clay.

The 28-year-old will be making her first grass appearance since bowing out of the second round of Wimbledon in 2021.

Svitolina is a decent grass court player and was a semifinalist at Wimbledon in 2019. However, none of her 20 finals have come on grass.

She will be playing in Birmingham for the sixth time. Her best was a quarterfinal finish in 2018, while she has been knocked out ion the opening round thrice. Playing in Birmingham for the first time in four years, she will be hoping to make a good start.

Fruhvirtova to Make Her Grass Debut

World no. 58 Linda Fruhvirtova will be playing her first tour level match on grass.

The 18-year-old Czech has a 1-3 record  on grass, having played all those matches at the lower level, qualifying or WTA 125 tournaments.

Her only win came in the first qualifying round at ‘s-Hertogenbosch last year. So the Czech teen will get her first taste of grass at the top level.

Fruhvirtova had a pretty good run at the Australian Open this year, where she made her fourth round debut at a Grand Slam. Other than that performance it has been an ordinary season for the promising youngster, as she has struggled to win consecutive matches at any level.

She has an overall record of 11-14 across levels this year, but is currently on a 5 match losing streak, with all those five matches played on clay across levels.

Can she end the losing streak in Birmingham?
