Linette Looking for First Win in Birmingham

World no. 21 Magda Linette has made three previous appearances in Birmingham, but has lost in the first round in all three of those occasions.

She comes to her fourth Birmingham Open with a 1-1 record on grass this year. While she won her first round match in Nottingham against Olivia Gadecki, she fell in the second round to Jodie Burrage.

Linette had a fantastic start to the year, reaching her first major semifinal at the Australian Open.

The 31-year-old world no. 21 is 17-15 this year. She was also a quarterfinalist in Merida and had reached the fourth round in Miami, but lost considerable momentum during the clay season, where she had a 4-5 record this year.

On grass, Linette has yet to produce a big result at the tour level, but she has already reached two finals at the ITF level, winning in Manchester in 2019 and finishing runner-up in Ilkley in 2015.

Paolini Struggles on Grass

Jasmine Paolini is coming off strong performances at the WTA 125 events on clay. The Italian won the Challenger title in Florence in May and finished runner-up in Makarska last week.

Overall she is 17-15 across levels this year. But at the tour level, the world no. 42 has a disappointing 5-9 record. Paolini’s best at the tour level this year was a quarterfinal finish in Lyon.

Can she put up a good show on grass? It will be a huge ask for her as she has always found things difficult on grass. She is 4-10 from all her matches on the surface, with all the four wins coming in 2017 during a 4-4 season on grass. Three of those wins came at the ITF level and one at a Wimbledon qualifier.

So, she has not won a match on grass in the last six years and has lost seven matches in a row.

Linette v Paolini Prediction and Tip

Linette is the better player on grass and that makes her the favourite in the opener against Paolini.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Linette to win: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 4/5
