He would have liked to do a lot better but in the end, Hurkacz would settle for his performance at the Stuttgart Open.
The Polish number one had a rather difficult first round win over Yosuke Watanuki and then looked to have gotten into the groove with a routine straight-set victory over Christopher O’Connell.
And just when he would have thought that most of the chips were in his favour in his semifinal against Jan-Lennard Struff, Hurkacz was caught napping. After having taken the first set, the Pole lost the next two to crash out of the tournament despite having started out a 4/6 favourite in that encounter.
Hurkacz now returns to the site of what was his first – and only – title on grass as he takes on a qualifier in his first round match. Can he keep his opponent at bay in double-quick time?

In his career which has now been on for nearly a decade, Eubanks has won just two main draw matches in grass-court competitions at the highest level. Both came in Newport spread across two different editions of the competition.
This is an indicator about how it’s not been the easiest for the American to notch up victories on this surface.
The good news for Eubanks is he has made it through the qualifiers on two successive occasions to make the grass tournament main draws. In Stuttgart last week, he entered the main draw only to lose to Richard Gasquet who would then go on to surprise Stefanos Tsitsipas as well.
Here, Eubanks has defeated Hugo Gaston in a three-set thriller before easing past Daniel Altmaier to set up this meeting with Hurkacz.
Much like in Stuttgart, this won’t be an easy one to get through for Eubanks.
