Stefanos Tsitsipas v Nicolas Jarry Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players and the scoreline reads 1-1. Tsitsipas had won their more recent clash at the Monte-Carlo Masters where he didn’t drop a set but Jarry had earlier surprised him on the grass courts of Rosmalen in 2019.

Tsitsipas Made to Grind by Barrere

It’s been a strange start to the grass swing for Tsitsipas. Ranked fifth in the world and having troubled some of the best right throughout this season, Tsitsipas looks like he is still adjusting to the switch over from clay to grass.

Last week those struggles looked to have resulted in a shock loss for Tsitsipas in Stuttgart where he had fallen to Richard Gasquet in the opener.

And this time around, Tsitsipas was stretched to a final set tie-breaker by the 37/10 second favourite Gregoire Barrere. He needed two hours and 25 minutes for his 6-7 (6), 6-4, 7-6 (3) win with Barrere frittering away a 3-1 lead in the second set after having won the first.

Tsitsipas clawed back from being three break-points down at 4-4 in the final set to clinch it in the tie-breaker.

He will now hope to build on this and make things more easy for himself in round two.

Jarry Sends Moutet on His Way

Like Tsitsipas, Jarry was also up against a French opponent in his opener. Unlike the Greek number one, however, Jarry did not have to spend that much time on court as he carved out a straight-set win over Corentin Moutet.

Jarry won 6-3, 7-5 in an hour 47 minutes to grab a second round spot on his Halle debut.

Having gone into the match as a 4/6 favourite, Jarry faced a whopping six break-points in the encounter but saved all of them. This included five in his first two service games of the second set, while Jarry himself earned his first break-point of that set in the 11th game.

He broke Moutet and then served it out to love to march on.

What’s interesting to note here is Jarry is more of a clay-court player, so much so that his last match on grass before this win had come all the way back in 2019. That season he had overcome Jannik Sinner and Tsitsipas in Rosmalen too.

Can he cause an upset here?

Tsitsipas v Jarry Prediction and Tip

Tsitsipas might have had an issue or two but we expect him to grow into playing on grass as the season wears on and a straight-set win looks like the most likely result here.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Tsitsipas to win: 4/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Tsitsipas to win in straight sets: 11/10
