Despite having gone into her opening round encounter against Marie Bouzkova as a distance second favourite at 6/4, Pera did not spend a lot of time on court for her victory.

Pera, who had never even made the main draw at this tournament before this, was a 6-4, 7-6 (3) winner over her Czech opponent in a match that lasted an hour and 35 minutes.

Elina Svitolina would have expected to give Fruhvirtova a bit of a fight at the very least given her opponent’s recent struggles at the highest level. Not only did Fruhvirtova shrug off her poor run in the lead-up to this opener at Birmingham, she also managed to win it with consummate ease.

Fruhvirtova needed a mere 53 minutes of court-time as she romped past her Ukrainian opponent for the loss of just two games in the match. She won 6-2, 6-0.

Having lost four matches on the bounce before this and with no grass court main draw wins under her belt in his career either, it looked like Fruhvirtova had a task on her hands. As it turned out she faced no break-points, winning 71% of her overall service points and broke her opponent a whopping five times.

With that much confidence under her belt follow this win now, Fruhvirtova can be expected to give Pera a fight despite starting out a 7/5 underdog here.
