Jannik Sinner v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came in Montpellier earlier this year and Sinner had won that quarterfinal in straight sets.

Sinner Needs Three Sets against Gasquet

Richard Gasquet is turning out to be quite a difficult customer these days and Sinner was at the receiving end of his grit and gumption this time.

Gasquet, who had recently sent Stefanos Tsitsipas out, made Sinner work hard for his opening round win here at Halle with the match lasting two and a half hours. Sinner came through 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 in the end despite frittering away 17 breaking opportunities in the encounter.

That’s right, Sinner had 20 break-points in his opener here and converted three of them but it’s the five he missed in the second set that could have gone on to haunt him.

It’s opportunities like these that Sinner will need to get more clinical about, having also lost in the quarterfinal of the Rosmalen Open last week. Can he ease past his fellow countryman in this second round match here?

Sonego Scrapes Past Karatsev

Much like Sinner, Sonego also needed three sets to get past his opening round opponent, Aslan Karatsev. Sonego, who was expected to face Nick Kyrgios before the Aussie pulled out and was replaced by Karatsev, needed nearly two hours to win his first round match.

Sonego blasted 15 aces in his 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over his Russian opponent, as he also took advantage of Karatsev’s poor second serve. He allowed Karatsev to win just nine of his second serve points and with the Russian getting only 61% of his first serves in, that became a more serious issue than he would have expected.

This follows Sonego’s second round appearance at the Stuttgart Open where he had routed another Italian player Matteo Berrettini in his opener. Unfortunately for Sonego, his dream of going deeper into the competition was done in by Christopher O’Connell.

He now will think he has a decent chance against Sinner despite the latter’s top-10 ranking because of his recent form issues.

Sinner v Sonego Prediction and Tip

Sinner is a favourite here but does that make him a runaway winner? We don’t think so given all that has transpired in recent times.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Sinner to win: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
