World no. 4 Caroline Garcia held off local hope Sabine Lisicki in straight sets on Monday to make it to the round of 16.

The third seed Frenchwoman saved all three of the break points that she faced in the match and converted 2 of 13 to beat the world no. 308, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.

Both players struck 15 aces each in the match, with Garcia winning 79% points on her first serve.

Garcia improved her season record to 24-12. She has featured in two finals this year, but finished runner-up in both the events, falling to Alycia Parks in Lyon and to Donna Vekic in Monterrey.

An 11-time champion on the tour, Garcia has won three titles on grass courts, one of which came last year in Bad Homburg.

Having kicked off her grass season with a win, Garcia will look to keep the winning run going.

Fourlis Progresses as Wang Retires

Jaimee Fourlis advanced to the second round as her first round opponent Wang Xinyu retired from the contest after the second set.

Wang had won the first set 3-6, but Fourlis won the second set 7-5, when the Chinese player withdrew from the contest.

The world no. 218 had qualified for the main draw with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Germany’s Mara Guth in the first qualifying round and then she defeated Peyton Stearns 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the second qualifying round.

With the win, the 23-year-old improved her season record to 17-14 across levels. She made it to two ITF finals, winning in Burnie 2 and finishing runner-up in Wiesbaden ITF.

This was Fourlis’s first main draw win on grass at the tour level. Can she pull off an upset win on Wednesday?
