Alcaraz Scrapes Through the Opener

While nobody can deny Alcaraz’s ascent to the top of the rankings has been quite pleasing to watch, it must also be quickly added he is yet to prove himself on grass. And while he is just 20 years old and has possibly a long career ahead, he will want to make a habit of winning such opening round matches on this surface more easily than he did.

Alcaraz was on court for two hours and 37 minutes in his first match on return following his French Open campaign, needing to come back from a set down to overcome Arthur Rinderknech.

Rinderknech had entered the tournament as a lucky loser but he looked to have put all of that behind him with successive breaks in the first set to take the lead. And while Alcaraz managed to hold on to his serve in the second set it became more and more difficult to break his opponent’s.

That came in the 11th game before Alcaraz levelled things out on his third set-point and then fell to a 2-0 deficit yet again in the third.

Alcaraz broke right back though and while he couldn’t do that again, he eased his way through the tie-breaker by racing off to a 6-1 lead. He closed it out soon after to win it 7-3.

Can things ease out for him a tad?

Lehecka Surprises Davidovich Fokina

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina had entered his first round match here against Lehecka as an 8/11 favourite but the Czech withstood an early bombardment to clinch a place in the second round in straight sets.

Lehecka needed an hour and a half for his 7-6 (4), 6-3 win over Fokina in which he fell 0-3 down in the opening set. In fact Fokina had a chance to wrap up the first set off Lehecka’s serve at 3-5, and then served for the set at 5-4 only for the world number 36 to come back and clinch it in a tie-breaker.

In the second, Lehecka improved his serving manifold, facing not a single break-point and winning all but three points on his serve. All he needed was one break of serve which came in the sixth game of the set after which Lehecka served to love in the ninth to seal his place.

Last week too Lehecka had made the second round of the Stuttgart Open before losing to Frances Tiafoe. Can he surprise the US Open winner here who is still looking to find his feet on grass?

Alcaraz v Lehecka Prediction and Tip

Alcaraz is 1/5 to win this and while it’s tough to bet against him we do think that things won’t come easy to him here. Expecting Lehecka to come up with a solid showing.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Lehecka to win a set: 11/10
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 4/5
