Avanesyan Upsets Kasatkina

Elina Avanesyan is having herself a moment on the tour at the moment.

Just a couple of weeks ago, in the Roland Garros, she scripted history by becoming the first lucky loser in 35 years to reach the last 16. She fell in the final qualifying round in Paris to Kayla Day, but luck favoured her, and she earned a ticket into the main draw.

From that point on, she beat Belinda Bencic, Leolia Jeanjean, and Clara Tauson before losing to Karolina Muchova.

Now here in Berlin, the 20-year-old has done it again – this time by beating the #11 Daria Kasatkina 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(7) – saving an incredible two match points in the final set tiebreak. That marathon affair went on for two and a half hours and saw Avanesyan fend off a dangerous attack from the experienced and in-form Kasatkina. Interestingly, she started as a lucky loser here as well (defeat to Laura Siegemund in the prelims).

Elina is the current World No. 81 and looks poised to rise up further. She is 21-13 in 2023, with an ITF title from Wiesbaden and a semifinal run in San Luis Challenger being her other highlights.

Blinkova Beats Siegemund

Anna Blinkova, too, found herself in a precarious opening match in Berlin. Playing Siegemund, she took the match 6-3, 6-7(3), 7-5 in three hours.

That win marked her fifth WTA Tour-level grass-court win. She is also now a step closer to making her quarterfinal debut on the surface.

This also marks quite a turnaround in Anna’s form, considering that between the Australian Open and Rome Open, she went through a streak of first or second-round losses in 11 consecutive tournaments. It wasn’t until the Strasbourg Open that she redeemed herself in the form of a runner-up feat.

Later, Blinkova reached the third round in French Open – but not before beating Caroline Garcia.

The world number 44 is now 20-15 for the season.

Blinkova v Avanesyan Prediction and Tip

Avanesyan makes for an interesting case to back here; she has got the rhythm and confidence needed to beat Blinkova. Add to this that Anna’s season so far hasn’t been entirely consistent, mired with early upsets against lower-ranked players, it becomes more evident by punters may want to back the younger of the two players.

Tips:

  • Low-Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games: 5/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Avanesyan to win 2-1: 11/4
