Sakkari Avenges Cornet Defeat

Sakkari and Alize Cornet had met last week in Nottingham in the second round there and it was the Frenchwoman who had come away a winner. Not only had she won but she had done that so convincingly there were question-marks around Sakkari’s status as a top-10 player.

The Greek number one responded in kind in the first round here as she romped to a straight-set win over Cornet to move a step closer to her semifinal appearance in this tournament last year.

In a match lasting an hour and 45 minutes, Sakkari was a 6-4, 6-2 winner despite facing a whopping 15 break-points in the encounter. Knowing that she has been struggling with her serves, Sakkari dug in deep and did not let that faze her too much despite getting broken twice.

In turn she raced off to a 5-1 lead in the first set and 4-1 in the second, allowing her that extra buffer when things really went south with her own serve.

Things could get easier now for Sakkari but she will need to keep focussing on her basics even as she looks to improve upon her service which saw her win a mere 57% of the total points.

Sasnovich Sends Azarenka Packing

In an all-Belarusian opening round encounter, Sasnovich overcame the 31/20 odds against her to scythe through Victoria Azarenka’s defences.

Sasnovich was a 6-4, 6-4 winner in a match lasting an hour and 39 minutes even as the world number 19 looked to shrug off the rustiness associated with her lack of grass court tennis over the last couple of seasons.

The two exchanged service breaks in the very first two games of the match but from that point onward, Sasnovich did not drop her serve again. She did face five more break-points though but came through without any trouble.

Even as she did that, Sasnovich got past Azarenka’s service on two more occasions – once apiece in the two sets – saved a break-point as she served for the match and then won it off her third match-point.

This follows a semifinal appearance for Sasnovich in Rosmalen last week, giving her an opportunity to continue with this momentum and topple the world number eight. Does she have that belief though?

Sakkari v Sasnovich Prediction and Tip

Sakkari is 2/5 to win this and while we think she will be a favourite here, we think Sasnovich won’t let this go too easily. Expect her to win a set.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Sasnovich to win a set: 8/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
