Jan-Lennard Struff v Alexander Bublik Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before, and Struff has won on each occasion.

The German won on clay in Hungary in 2018, and on hard courts in St. Petersburg three years later, on the main tour.

And he also won their Challenger match, again on hard courts, in Phoenix earlier this year.

Struff Continues Where He Left Off in Stuttgart

Having dropped out of the top 150 at the end of last year, Struff’s career appeared to be in decline, but he has come roaring back in 2023, reaching two finals, including on the grass of Stuttgart last week, and performing well in tournaments like Monte Carlo.

Certainly he was too strong for the qualifier Roman Safiullin in their first round match, especially in a one-sided first set, which he claimed for the loss of just one game, after notching up three service breaks.

Saifullin made more of a fist of it in the second set, and broke the German, only to surrender the advantage several games later.

With no further breaks of service occurring it went to a tie-break.

Again Safiullin gained the early advantage with the first mini-break, but then Struff switched into a higher gear, winning five points on the bounce to wrap up the victory.

Bublik Brushes Aside Former Halle Champion

Bublik has decent grass court credentials, having twice made the third round of Wimbledon, and having reached the final of the Hall of Fame Championship in Newport Beach last year. And he reinforced those with a comprehensive defeat of the 2018 Halle Champion, Borna Coric of Croatia, the number seven seed, in their first round match.

Bublik took a firm grasp on proceedings with an early break, and, when the Croat did have break back opportunities, was quick to close them down, wrapping up the first set in 40 minutes.

He was even more ruthless in the second set, breaking the world number 17 three times, and conceding just the one game.

Struff v Bublik Prediction and Tip three

Although Bublik was impressive in beating Coric, he is playing a man who has won all of their three previous encounters, and on a surface on which he excels. It is hard to look past Struff as the eventual winner.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Struff to win: 8/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 24.5 games in the match: 10/11
