Daniil Medvedev v Roberto Bautista Agut Head to Head

There have been six previous meetings between these two players dating back 2017 and Bautista-Agut has won four of those. Two of them have come on grass and it’s 1-1 there including a Medvedev win at Halle last year at this very stage of the competition.

Medvedev Scrapes Past Djere

Medvedev hadn’t had the best of starts to the grass swing last week when he fell in his opener at the Rosmalen Open and while he won his first round match in Halle this week, things haven’t looked as good as he would have liked.

Because while he came through in his second round encounter against Laslo Djere, it took him some time to get going again.

The match lasted two hours and 12 minutes and Medvedev needed three sets to scrape through against a player who is more known for his exploits outside of grass. He was broken twice in the process before winning 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3 in the second round.

This follows a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Marcos Giron in round one but by the looks of things, Medvedev will need to do a lot better than he has so far on grass in 2023 to have a chance of going deep at Wimbledon.

Knowing Medvedev’s fighting spirit, he might still do it but it needs to begin with his results here in Halle.

Bautista Agut Goes Past Nakashima

Playing in his first grass court competition of the season Bautista Agut registered a second straight-set win to reach the quarterfinals. A four-time quarterfinalist at this event, Bautista Agut took a relatively difficult path to make it his fifth time here with Brandon Nakashima pushing him hard.

In the end, Bautista Agut was on court for nearly two hours before sealing his berth in the last eight 7-5, 7-6 (2).

Bautista Agut was broken just once in the match – and that was the only break-point he faced too – and that came in the 11th game of the second set. It gave Nakashima a chance to serve out for the equaliser but Bautista Agut broke right back and then won the ensuing tie-breaker.

Having eased past Andre Vavassori in the opening round, Bautista Agut will be happy to have made it two wins in a row – something he hadn’t done all season since his fourth round appearance at the Australian Open in January.

Can he topple the struggling Medvedev here?

Medvedev v Bautista Agut Prediction and Tip
