Although primarily regarded as a clay court player, Krejcikova is the reigning Wimbledon doubles champion, and she reached the fourth round at the All-England club two years ago.

The number one seed in Birmingham, so far she has justified that status with two straight set wins, beginning with the Spaniard, Cristina Bucsa, the world number 76.

Her second round opponent was a familiar face in the form of fellow Czech, Tereza Martincova, currently ranked 122 in the world, who had come through the qualifying competition.

In a first set dominated by serve, Krejcikova was the one finally able to fashion a break point, which she took giving her the chance to serve out.

Martincova gave herself brief hope with an early break in the second set, only for it to be quickly extinguished as Krejcikova responded straight away.

Then Martincova forced two more break points, could not take either of them, and was left to rue that when she was broken again next game.

Krejcikova served out next game.

Still just 18, Fruhvirtova is set to make her main draw debut at Wimbledon in ten days’ time, having been beaten in the first round of qualifying last year.

Playing in her first grass court tournament of the year, it took her no time at all to find her feet, knocking out Elina Svitolina in the first round in straight sets for the loss of just two games.

Nor did her second round opponent, Bernarda Pera, offer much greater opposition, at least in the first set, which the Czech claimed for the loss of just a single game.

Pera, the world number 27, though, came to life in the second set, and having conceded an early break, struck back with two breaks of her own.

Unfortunately for the American, she could not hold on to her advantage, Fruhvirtova broke back, and it eventually went to a tie-break.

The Czech immediately went a mini-break up, consolidated her lead, and eventually served out to reach her first grass court quarter-final.
