Jelena Ostapenko ended Venus Williams’ gritty effort in Birmingham in the second round on Thursday.

The 26-year-old Latvian saved 8 of 12 break points and converted 6 of 14 to edge out the 43-year-old, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in two hours and 24 minutes.

The world no. 17 won 75% points on her first serve and struck 11 aces in the contest.

She was also stretched to three sets by Czech teen Linda Noskova in the first round. But that match lasted just an hour and 42 minutes as Ostapenko won 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.

Ostapenko, who improved her season record to 21-12, is into her third Birmingham quarterfinal but will be aiming to reach a first semifinal.

Two of her most notable performances this year include a quarterfinal finish at the Australian Open and a semifinal finish in Rome.

World no. 72 Magdalena Frech marched into a second consecutive tour-level quarterfinal as she ousted the eighth seed Sorana Cirstea in the second round on Thursday.

The Polish player, who had fallen in the last eight stage in Nottingham last week, needed two hours and 34 minutes to see off the world no. 38, 6-3, 6-7 (1-7), 6-4. Frech had saved 4 of 8 break points in the match, while converting 7 of 13.

Frech improved to 23-17 across levels and 6-1 on grass this year.

She had made it to the main draw with tough three-set qualifying round wins over Amelia Rajecki and Jil Teichmann respectively.

Following that, she then knocked out Barbora Strýcová 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 in the opening round match.
