Ostapenko Rallies Past Frech

World no. 17 Jelena Ostapenko bounced back after losing the first set to defeat Poland’s Magdalena Frech 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the quarterfinal in Birmingham on Friday.

Ostapenko, who had made it to Birmingham quarterfinals two times before, finally crossed the last eight hurdle with a comeback win over the qualifier.

In the two hour and 16 minute contest, the Latvian saved 8 of 11 break points and converted half of the 10 to win her third straight match in three sets.

Ostapenko had kickstarted the tournament with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 victory over Linda Noskova. She then edged out the veteran Venus Williams 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in the second round.

This is the second time that the former world no. 5 has reached a semifinal this year, following her run to the final four in Rome.

Ostapenko was also a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open this year.

The 26-year-old is aiming to reach her 14th WTA final. The 2017 French Open champion, who has won five titles over her career, has a 1-1 record in grass court finals. Can she reach her third final on grass on Saturday?

Potapova Rebounds to Beat Dart

Just like Ostapenko, world no. 21 Anastasia Potapova, too, bounced back from a set down to win her quarterfinal match on Friday.

The Russian saved 3 of 7 break points and capitalised on 5 of 12 breaking opportunities that she held to beat local hope Harriet Dart 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a two hour and six minute contest.

This was the third straight match in which the 22-year-old lost the first set but fought back to advance.

In the first round, the Russian had beaten Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 6-4, while in the second round, Potapova had defeated American Caty McNally 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-0).

Potapova is 25-12 this season and will be playing in her third semifinal of the year. She had won the title in Linz but had lost in the final four stage in Stuttgart.

The two-time tour-level champion will be aiming to reach her sixth final on Saturday.

Ostapenko v Potapova Prediction and Tip

This is going to be a thrilling edge-of-the-seat contest between the world no. 17 and the world no. 21. Both have been consistent performers this season and have delivered gritty performances en route the semifinal.

Ostapenko has far more experience on grass than Potapova and she has also reached two grass court finals before, while Potapova is looking to reach her maiden grass final. So it is Ostapenko’s experience that makes her a slight favourite in this contest.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Ostapenko to win: 4/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
