Camila Giorgi v Anastasia Potapova Head to Head

Camila Giorgi leads the head-to-head 1-0. The Italian power hitter defeated Potapova 6-4 6-0 at the 2022 Australian Open – their only meeting so far.

Giorgi Loses Thriller in Birmingham

Camila Giorgi suffered her second successive defeat at this year’s grass-court swing. The pint-sized Italian was stunned by 42-year-old Venus Williams in the first round in Birmingham last week.

It follows Giorgi’s three-set defeat to American upstart Elizabeth Mandlik in Nottingham. But it is defeat to the seven-time grand slam winner Venus that raised plenty of eyebrows.

Venus was playing just her fourth match of the season and entered the tournament with a wild card. And just five games into the match the legendary Williams took a medical timeout for a knee injury that needed heavy strapping to allow her to continue.

But despite Venus’ apparent struggles with her movement, Giorgi failed to capitalize. Venus showed her trademark supreme serving, even surprising herself that she could hit serves as fast as 120mph.

She landed 65% first serves throughout the match, which was significantly better than Giorgi’s 55%, and registered six double faults fewer than the Italian.

Ultimately, it came down to two nerve-shredding tiebreaks that proved decisive and Giorgi lost both. The match lasted three hours and 16 minutes and it was Venus’ first top-50 win since 2019. But of relevance, it landed a big blow for Giorgi’s penchant for momentum.

Potapova on the Verge of Top-20 Breakthrough

Anastasia Potapova’s hard work is paying off big time this season. A consistent approach and positive mentality have steered the Russian to a career-high World No. 21, and a good run in Eastbourne should see her crack the world’s top 20 for the first time.

Last year, Russian players were banned from competing at Wimbledon. Potapova, like many of her compatriots, didn’t have the motivation to play on grass. She played one match during the entire grass swing.

So any points she accumulates this season would be added bonus in her quest to rise up the rankings.

Potapova reached the semifinals in Birmingham in her first tournament since a third-round defeat to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova at the French Open. She lost to eventual champion Jelena Ostapenko.

She played four three-set matches in Birmingham, extending her record of playing the most three-set matches this season to 25.

While Potapova will be interested in the end result, it’s not a great statistic in the long term if she keeps depleting her energy before the latter rounds of tournaments.

Giorgi v Potapova Prediction and Tip

Defeat to Venus was almost unthinkable, so it will be interesting to see whether it will have any detrimental impact on Giorgi in Eastbourne. With that said, Potapova is playing the best tennis of her career this year. We’ll take consistency over experience in this one.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Potapova to win: 4/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 10/11
