Moutet defeated Christopher O’Connell 7-5, 6-4 in an hour 37 minutes to enter the second round of a grass court tournament – a rare feat for a player who had won just three grass matches in his career before this.
The Frenchman faced a bit of a fight in the first set with O’Connell coming back to level things out from being 2-4 down. At 4-5, Moutet faced three set-points on his own serve but saved them all, before breaking his opponent in the very next game.
He wrapped up the set and then went 2-0 up in the second set. That was all the help Moutet needed as he faced no break-points in the set before serving it out in the 10th game and grabbing the win.

Despite coming into his opening round match at 14/5 odds to win it, Carballes Baena was able to overturn a shoddy second set showing to defeat Ilya Ivashka in three sets.
Carballes Baena won 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 in a match lasting two hours and eight minutes, to register what was just his second career win on grass. Yes, that’s right, Carballes Baena has had a wretched run on grass, with just one win from nine tournaments in his career.
Which is all the more surprising how he managed to clinch this against a player who was a huge favourite to clinch it.
This comes on the back of a solid clay-court season for Carballes Baena though which might have played a bit of a part. It was in this very season that Carballes Baena broke into the top 50 for the first time too, hitting a career-best ranking of 49th in the world.
And this victory on grass looks to be an add-on to that achievement.
