Stefanos Tsitsipas v Dominic Thiem Head to Head

There have been nine previous meetings between these two and Thiem leads 5-4. All but one of these matches, however, came before Thiem suffered his wrist injury.

On his comeback they faced off at the 2023 Madrid Masters and Tsitsipas had needed three sets to come through.

They have never played each other on grass before this.

Tsitsipas Hoping for Revival on Grass

Tsitsipas had come into the pre-Wimbledon grass swing with a lot of hope given his form otherwise. Sure, he hadn’t won a single tournament in 2023 but had shown what he’s capable of at the highest level by making the final of the Australian Open and the quarterfinal at Roland-Garros.

Add the Barcelona Open final and Rome Masters semifinals to the mix and you have a season that is worth remembering for the world number five.

On grass, however, Tsitsipas has floundered. At least at the time of writing.

He’s in his third grass court competition for the season, forced to play at Mallorca just the week before Wimbledon as well because of his underwhelming performances elsewhere. The Greek number one was sent packing by Richard Gasquet in his Stuttgart Open opener and then lost to clay court specialist Nicolas Jarry in Halle’s second round.

Can he turn things around here at Wimbledon where he has never gone beyond the fourth round after his struggling performance at Mallorca as well?

Thiem on a Four-Match Losing Streak

While Thiem has won the odd match here or there on the Challenger circuit, he hasn’t won one from his previous four encounters at the highest level. In fact, starting with that Tsitsipas defeat in Madrid, Thiem has gone down four times in a row.

This includes a first round loss at the Halle Open to old friend and adversary Alexander Zverev, who defeated him 6-3, 6-4 in that opener.

Even before Thiem became a pale version of his old Grand Slam winning self, he has never done well on grass. Even after struggling through part of the past couple of years, Thiem’s win-loss on clay and hardcourt surfaces is a whopping 70% and 59% respectively, but on grass he has won just 14 matches to his 30 defeats.

And while Tsitsipas is himself in a bit of a strife in recent times, Thiem will know he could find things rather difficult in a best of five match on his least favourite surface.

Tsitsipas v Thiem Prediction and Tip

Tsitsipas will get a bit of a respite from the perspective of his opponent’s form but can he win this in straight sets? I have my doubts.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Thiem to win a set: 4/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Games Handicap Thiem +5.5: 4/5
