Musetti Shines in Round One

Lorenzo Musetti had a really strong start at Wimbledon as the Italian is proving rather comfortable on grass. He played a couple of matches on the surface showing a really decent level and it’s translated to Wimbledon. Facing Juan Pablo Varillas, Musetti cruised in three sets.

His opponent is a noted clay expert, one that is capable of playing some amazing tennis on that surface but not outside of it. His limitations on grass were quickly shown as the Italian cruised through the games. Five aces and 33 winners isn’t some spectacular stat but it was good enough.

He didn’t have to do too much as Varillas helped him with 32 of his own errors. Things will get harder for Musetti in the next round but he certainly play some really solid tennis on gras.

He’s 6-3 on the surface this year though 6-7 overall in his career.

Munar Beats Isner

John Isner was once a spectacular player on grass thanks to his serve which was impossible to return. Munar handled it pretty well at Wimbledon breaking him plenty of times in the match. Isner served 17 aces in four sets which isn’t a lot at Wimbledon.

Munar’s return position had to do something with that as he was able to get many balls back which could have been aces or service winners. He’s a typical clay player who stands behind the line and forces you to play one more shot. That’s a terrible matchup for Isner on paper and it showed.

The American blasted 51 winners though Munar wasn’t too shaby either with 45. When you add only 25 unforced errors to that the picture becomes clear.

Munar won because he played better and he’ll win again if he plays well again.

Musetti v Isner Prediction and Tip

While I do think that Munar can give Musetti some trouble, I think the Italian will handle it well. He lost to Munar three times, once this year, but on grass I expect him to win. The Spaniard is 2-10 on grass for a reason but expect him to win at least a set.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 3,5 sets in the match: 4/6
