Elena Rybakina v Shelby Rogers Head to Head

This is an intriguing rivalry with five previous meetings yielding three wins for Rybakina and two for Rogers. On grass, they have faced off thrice with Rybakina leading 2-1. Rogers had won at Rosmalen last year.

Defending Champion Rybakina Ousted Early in Berlin

Rybakina hadn’t had the best of beginnings on grass last season too and she had come out of nowhere to win the Wimbledon title following that.

This year too, the trend seems to have started out in a similar direction with Rybakina falling early in the only grass court competition she participated in before the start of this major.

The world number three sent Polina Kudermetova out in the first round of the Berlin Open last week but in the second round she was a three-set loser at the hands of Donna Vekic. This was after she had won the opening set.

What Rybakina will hope is to turn things around at the big tournament itself and dish out a repeat of last season. Of course, Rybakina’s performances haven’t been restricted to only her title win at Wimbledon with the Kazakh having also finished a finalist at the Australian Open this season.

She followed that up with title wins at the Indian Wells Open and Italian Open while also being a finalist at the Miami Open.

Rogers on a Losing Run

A third round appearance at both, the Charleston Open and Madrid Open would have been slightly underwhelming for Rogers but she wouldn’t have minded it as much as what’s followed.

In the four matches that Rogers has played since reaching the third round in Madrid, she has not won anything and that could be a worrying sign.

Rogers also featured in one grass court competition in Eastbourne in the the week leading up to Wimbledon but even there, she fell in the first round. This defeat came at the hands of Camila Osorio, a player ranked ranked outside the top 80.

On another day, in even slightest of forms, Rogers could have been a difficult opponent for even a top-10 player. In the current scenario she will need to play out of her skin to hold any chance.
