The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 27 year old Swiss, and his Japanese opponent, who is two years younger.

Huesler is Now the Swiss Number One

The days when Swiss male players were a major force in Grand Slams now seems to be over, at least for now. Huesler is the top ranked player from his country just now, and he is currently only 83 in the world.

Nor will he feel particularly confident going into this match. His one previous appearance in the main draw at Wimbledon last year ended in a first round defeat.

He has something in common with Watanuki, though, in that he was recently beaten by the Australian Rinky Hijikata on grass, although in his case it was in the second round of Rosmalen.

His most recent tournament was in Eastbourne, where he came through qualifying, before suffering another second round defeat, this time to the Argentine, Francisco Cerundulo.

Lucky Loser Watanuki

This will be a Wimbledon main draw debut for Watanuki, but he has very much got in through the back door. Having been beaten in the final round of qualifying, fortune was on his side and he claimed one of the Lucky Loser spots on offer.

Still he will now be able to claim that he has played in two Grand Slams this year, having made his debut in Melbourne.

Not that Watanuki will necessarily be expecting too much of himself on grass.

He did qualify in Stuttgart and beat Feliciano Lopez there, but that should be put in the context that the Spaniard is now 41 years old.

A reversion to the Challenger tour in Ilkley the following week did not go according to plan though, as he was beaten in the first round there by the Australian Hijikata, losing in straight sets.

Huesler v Watanuki Prediction and Tip

Neither man has ever won a match at Wimbledon before, so it will be a first for one of them.

As the higher ranked player Huesler will start the favourite, but he will not begin their match as necessarily a confident one.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Huesler to win: 7/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 31.5 games in the match: 5/4
