The pair have played each other once before, and that was just a few weeks ago on grass at Rosmalen. Humbert won comfortably in straight sets.

Kubler is now a Grand Slam winner, having claimed the doubles title in his home even of the Australian Open with partner Rinky Hijikata in January.

However, it was at Wimbledon last year when he achieved his best singles result in a major, reaching the fourth round before eventually losing to Taylor Fritz in straight sets.

This year, to date, his best results on grass have come on the Challenger tour. He reached the quarter-finals in Surbiton before losing to Andy Murray, and then won the event in Ilkley, beating the Austrian Sebastian Ofner in the final.

His ventures on to the main tour have been less successful. He was beaten by Humbert in the first round in Rosmalen, and at the same stage in Mallorca by another Frenchman Constant Lestienne.

Four years ago Humbert reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, That remains his best performance in a Grand Slam to date, although he made the third round last year.

And, two years ago, he reaffirmed his grass court credentials by winning the tournament in Halle.

He has enjoyed success on the Challenger tour this year, finishing runner-up in Pau in France, and winning tournaments in Cagliari and Bordeaux, both on clay.

That victory over Kubler in Rosmalen was so far the only one that he has managed on grass this year. He lost his next match in the Netherlands, going down in three sets to the Finn Emil Ruusuvouri.

And, at Queen’s Club, he was on the end of a first round upset, beaten in straight sets by the British wildcard, Ryan Penniston, currently ranked 267 in the world.

Kubler has shown recently that he can play on grass, so he should not be taken lightly.

However, the way that Humbert dealt with him in Rosmalen suggests that he has his measure, and the Frenchman can be confident of progressing through to the second round.
