Beatriz Haddad Maia v Yulia Putintseva to Head

It is 1-0 to Maia; they last met in the 2023 WTA Abu Dhabi, where she won in three sets (two going to tie-break).

Maia in Poor Form

Beatriz Haddad Maia is coming off a pretty disappointing grass swing – something which will very well play a role during her campaign in Wimbledon.

She is 1-2; most recently, she played in Eastbourne, where she retired in mid-match against Petra Martic in round two. In the opener of that tournament, too, Maia faced stiff resistance from Marie Bouzkova – taking the match to three sets.

Before that, the Brazilian participated in the Nottingham Open, where she was handed a first-round exit by Daria Snigur.

In 2022, Beatriz was 12-2 on grass – which included titles from Birmingham and Nottingham.

Overall, the current World No. 13 has had a decent year. She is 23-14 at the moment, with her best results coming on clay in Stuttgart & Rome (quarterfinal) and the French Open (semifinal).

Putintseva in a Rut

World No. 53 Yulia Putintseva last played in Eastbourne – her only grass event of the season. It didn’t go according to the plan; she was handed a hammering in doubles (with Kamila Rakhimova) from the pairing of Gauff-Pegula, while in singles, she retired in the opening game against Heather Watson.

It seems that fitness may be a concern for the Kazakh but lucky for her, it may be the case for Maia too.

Putintseva’s year can be summarised at 15-15, with her best results being her final-eight run in WTA Rabat and a round-three stint at the Roland Garros.

Over the years, Yulia has never made it beyond round two in Wimbledon. Add to this a serious absence of grass wins (overall pedigree), she may very well be in store for a demanding match.

Maia v Putintseva Prediction and Tip

Maia starts as the odds-on favourite, but she is vulnerable. Being against Putintseva should help her case, but then again, the number 13 seed has had moments in 2023 where she was beaten rather shockingly by the underdogs. That alone should serve as a precedent for Yulia.

Tips:

  • Low-Risk Tip: Maia to win: 1/3
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
