Vekic Was a Finalist in Berlin

It’s been a great year for Donna Vekic. The world no. 20 comes into her ninth Wimbledon in excellent form having finished runner-up in Berlin last week.

The Croatian has an overall record of 26-10 this season and that includes a title success in Monterrey — her fourth career title; and her splendid run in Berlin where she went down to Petra Kvitova in the final.

Vekic also made a quarterfinal debut at the Australian Open this year. So overall, she is in good form and particularly on grass, where she is 5-2 this year.

Vekic has played four of her 12 tour-level finals on grass, winning one of those.

At Wimbledon though, the 27-year-old is still looking to find her feet. In her previous eight appearances, Vekic’s best was a round of 16 appearance in 2018. Otherwise she has been dumped out in either the first or the second round.

This year, she s in fine form and may be eager to make a deep run.

Zhang Has Not Won a Singles Match in the Last Five Months

Facing Vekic will be world no. 37 Zhang Shuai, who was a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon in 2019.

However, despite having a solid record in the past, Zhang is currently going through a lean patch and enters the first round at Wimbledon having lost 11 matches in a row.

When was the last time the Chinese player had won a singles match? It was on January 31 against Madison Brengle in the first round in Lyon. She went 0-3 on clay and is 0-3 on grass as well, having lost her opening round matches in Nottingham, Birmingham and Eastbourne.

However, 2023 had started off brightly for the 34-year-old as she went on to reach the round of 16 at the Australian Open. But she struggled to win in any other venue this year.

Zhang has three singles titles and three runner-up finishes at the tour level and that includes a 0-2 record in grass court finals. She is a good player on grass but is woefully out of touch at the moment.

Vekic v Zhang Prediction and Tip

Vekic has been consistent this season and will head into the tournament with a lot of confidence behind her. Zhang, in contrast, will be short on confidence. Expect Vekic to win the contest in straight sets.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Vekic to win: 1/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
