Worrying Lack of Form from van de Zandschulp

Botic van de Zandschulp arrives at this year’s Wimbledon in his worst run of form. The Dutchman has lost six matches in a row, and is defending fourth-round points in the next week, following his run to the round of 16 last year.

van de Zandschulp squandered the chance to bag his first ATP title in Munich in April. He held four championship points, but still ended on the losing side of a wild final against Holger Rune.

It looks like that defeat stung for a while and the psychological damage it has done to his confidence is extremely worrying. He even lost his opening match at this year’s French Open to qualifier Thiago Agustin Tirante in four sets.

van de Zandschulp has played in two warmup tournaments coming to Wimbledon, most recently in Eastbourne where he suffered a shock three-set defeat to Mikael Ymer.

Although the 27-year-old marries so well on grass, his apparent low confidence could cost him again when he faces an improving Zhizhen Zhang.

Zhang Could Recreate Chinese History

At this time last year, China did not have a single male representative in the top 100 of the tennis rankings. In fact, no Chinese man had broken the centurion club in the past.

Zhizhen Zhang, the 26-year-old who hails from Shanghai, made history last October after winning 36 of his 46 matches and reaching four finals on the Challenger circuit in the four months prior.

Although Zhang was overtaken by Dallas champion Yibing Wu (who became the first Chinese man to win an ATP title), it is Zhang who has now won the ranking battle ahead of Wimbledon sitting at least five spots above Wu.

Zhang has enjoyed a breakout year on the ATP Tour in 2023, earning the first top-10 win of his career in Madrid when he upset Taylor Fritz and reached the quarterfinals of a Masters tournament for the first time.

And at this year’s Wimbledon, he could become the first Chinese man to win a singles match at the Championships since 1959 should he prevail against van de Zandschulp.

van de Zandschulp v Zhang Prediction and Tip

It’s a big moment for Zhang who could rewrite yet another chapter in the history books. And this looks like a good time to be facing the off-color and out-of-sorts van de Zandschulp.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Zhang set handicap +2.5: 3/10
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 38.5 games in the match: 4/5
