Samsonova in Mediocre Form

Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova, seeded 15th for Wimbledon this year, is coming off a bleak quarterfinal showing in Bad Homburg.

Beating Viktoriya Tomova and Linda Noskova (the latter with some trouble), she met Katerina Siniakova in the final eight. Samsonova lost the match 5-7, 6-4, 2-6.

With her record now at 16-15, the World No. 15 had reached the stage in Den Bosch too – but there, she retired in the second set against Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

The entirety of Samsonova’s season is marked with such results. Except for her runner-up feat in WTA Abu Dhabi (where she beat Barbora Krejcikova, Veronika Kudermetova, and Qinwen Zheng), Liudmila has not won more than two matches in any other tournament.

That said, her form on grass does show some promise. She has had ample practice in recent weeks while over the years, she has won the German Open and made it to round four in Wimbledon.

Bogdan has some Grass Practice

Ana Bogdan, World No. 61, participated in grass warm-up tournaments in Eastbourne and Birmingham – starting both as a qualifier.

In the former, she made it as far as round two, while in the latter, she was beaten in the opener match itself.

This puts Bogdan with 14 wins and just as many defeats ahead of the London Slam.

2023 for her has brought a series of long, disappointing early exits on the WTA Tour. There is only one exception to this – a round of 16 appearance in WTA Dubai as a qualifier.

At 30 years old, Bogdan is experienced, but it seems that grass courts have never been her strong suit. Add to this a lack of titles and top-1o wins, it is hard not to see why she will start as an underdog in the upcoming match.

Samsonova v Bogdan Prediction and Tip

Anything short of a win would be unexpected from Samsonova, but given her inconsistencies, she may be tested by Ana. We may be looking at a good number of games here.

Tips:

  • Low-Risk Tip: Samsonova to win: 3/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 3/1
