Naomi Osaka v Su-Wei Hsieh Head to Head

The two have met only twice on the tour and Osaka has won both of those matches. They met as recently as the Australian Open earlier this year, where the Japanese won in three sets.

A Shaky Start for Osaka

Naomi Osaka started her journey in Miami with a three-set win over Yanina Wickmayer. It wasn’t the cleanest of the wins as she had to fend off the attack from the Belgian in the second set. At the end of the day, however, she got the job done with 6-0,  7-6(3), 6-1.

There is a lot at stake for the top seed here in Miami. Following her fourth-round exit in Indian Wells last week, the gap in the rankings has been reduced considerably by other players. The reigning US Open champion will have to go the distance here to stay at the top.

Given Osaka’s overall form and her sensational run of things, she is more than capable of doing that. However, she needs to keep a clear mind in order to get there.

Hsieh Comes in with Definite Threat

Su-Wei Hsieh enjoyed a bye into the second round as the number 27 seed. She started off with a straight-set win over Alison Riske to set up the Osaka clash.

The Taiwan-born player has had a good spell this season, with a couple of semifinal appearances in WTA Auckland and WTA Dubai. Between these two events, she featured in a couple of tournaments where she lost early. A similar result was observed in the Indian Wells too, where she lost her opening match to Johanna Konta.

Hsieh has achieved more as a doubles player than as a single. Last year, however, she won her first singles title in 6 years – the Japan Women’s Open. She has more experience than Osaka but lacks the form and momentum like her Japanese counterpart.

Naomi Osaka v Su-Wei Hsieh Predictions & Tips

Osaka will certainly start as the heavy favourite here but Hsieh will not make this an easy match. It wouldn’t be surprising if this one goes to three sets.

Tip: Osaka to win 2-1: 11/4 (bet365)
