Sorana Cirstea v Tatjana Maria Head to Head

They played four times so far and Cirstea won three times. The only one Maria won was last year’s Wimbledon one.

Limited Prep for Cirstea

Sorana Cirstea has had a really solid year so far with a 21-14 record but her grass prep was a bit underwhelming. Never a great grass player (34-38 all-time), Cirstea could have certainly used more matches than the three she ultimately played.

Her only win was over Ana Bogdan in Birmingham though that didn’t last long as she lost to the same player in Eastbourne. She lost to Magdalena Frech in Birmingham the week before eas well.

So you can see she’s lost to some very winnable matches and it’s pretty much in line with how she generally plays on the surface. It’s her weakest surface for a reason. Maria is generally a good matchup for her but not on grass. They played last year at Wimbledon and Cirstea won that match.

It’s unlikely that this will go any differently but there is always a chance. She should be motivated at least.

Maria Looking Strong On Grass

Unlike her opponent, Tatjana Maria played plenty of matches on the surface posting a 7-4 record overall. She’s generally been playing a lot of tennis this year posting a 33-20 record overall. Gaiba in Italy was where she won most of her grass matches.

She made a run to the finals there but couldn’t get it done losing to up-and-coming youngster Ashlyn Krueger in a very competitive final. Even so, she should be coming back to London with a lot of confidence, especially after how she played here last year.

She had her best grand slam result ever making a deep run and that’s not out of the question this year either. I don’t see it personally but she’s proving once again capable of playing well on grass. There aren’t that many players that feel that comfortable on grass and experience can be key.

Surprisingly though, she’s the minor underdog.

Cirstea v Maria Prediction and Tip

I can understand the logic behind Cirstea being the minor favourite but I don’t personally see it. Take Maria to win the match.

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Maria to win the match: 1/1
