Pegula Made to Work Hard by Davis

It was expected to be a fairly straightforward first round win for Pegula but fellow Lauren Davis saved match-point after match-point in the second set and managed to push it into the third.

In the end, Pegula came through in three sets but not before she had fallen a break down in the decider and ended up using two hours and 23 minutes to scrape through.

Pegula broke twice in the first three games of the opening set to race off with the lead but a way better serving from Davis held her opponent in check in the second set. Davis, in fact, had a chance to serve out the set at 5-3 but Pegula roared back with a break of serve and then went 6-5 up in the following tie-breaker.

She missed that match-point and then again at 7-6 and 8-7 before Davis ran away with three successive points and a break in the first game of the third set to turn the match on its head.

Pegula clawed back though, breaking Davis in the very next game and then again in the eighth game before serving out the match in the ninth.

Can she make things a tad easier on herself come the round two as she looks to emulate her 2022 Wimbledon showing?

Bucsa in a Thriller with Rakhimova

Bucsa had started out a favourite coming into her opening round match against Kamilla Rakhimova but there were multiple occasions during the encounter that it seemed like things could have swung away from her.

None more so in the deciding set when Rakhimova took a 9-5 lead in the match tie-breaker and had four match-points to close out the encounter.

Instead, Bucsa won a shocking six points in a row to win a two hour, 46 minutes long thriller and move into the second round for the first time at Wimbledon. She won 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (9).

This follows a rather poor run on grass for Bucsa who had lost in the first round at the Nottingham Open, qualified for the Birmingham Open only to lose her opener again and then failed to even make it through the Eastbourne International qualifiers.

Can she put up an equally fighting display against the world number four?

Pegula v Bucsa Prediction and Tip

Pegula might have been taken to three sets by Davis but we can expect this to be a lot easier in the second round.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Pegula to win in straight sets: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
